Copies of Hunting and Trading on the Great Plains, edited by Schuyler Jones, grandson of the Author, James R Mead are currently available. This is a great and very readable first hand account of Kansas from 1859 by one of the founders of Wichita.
Mayday Over Wichita by D. W. Carter
This book's subtitle is The Worst Military Aviation Disaster in Kansas History. It covers the tragedy of the KC-135 crash on North Piatt Street which happened in January of 1965. Forty-seven people were killed or injured, many of them children, when the fully loaded refueling tanker slammed into their neighborhood. The first memorial to the crash victims was on McConnell Air Force Base set up in 2001. A memorial was not built on the crash site until 2007.
